Laying Resin Bound Paving

Everything you need to know before buying your resin kit from RSD

We’ve gathered the most common questions our customers ask to help you know exactly what to expect.

From understanding the difference between resin bound and resin bonded systems to installation tips and shipping details, this handy FAQ guide is your first step toward creating beautiful resin paving.

What’s the difference between resin bound and bonded?

Resin bound is a porous surfacing solution in which the resin (Parts A & B) is mixed with the aggregate in a Baron mixer before being applied. It’s laid using trowels onto a porous surface such as permeable concrete or open-graded tarmac at a minimum depth of 15mm. If laid over an MOT or gravel subbase, the depth should be at least 40mm.

Resin bonded paving, on the other hand, is a non-porous system. The resin components are mixed in the provided buckets and spread over a level, finished surface. The aggregate is then scattered over the top to adhere to the thin resin layer. Please note, this system requires appropriate drainage to manage surface water.

What are the key considerations when laying resin bound paving?

Resin bound paving should never be installed on a non-porous surface unless proper drainage is in place. Without adequate drainage, water can seep through the porous layer and become trapped between it and the non-porous base, leading to cracks and potential failure of the surface.

Temperature is also a critical factor. In hot conditions (25°C or above), the resin will cure much faster, often in 20 minutes or less. Be sure to have enough installers on hand to complete the work quickly and efficiently.

What is the minimum depth required for resin bound paving installation?

When installing resin bound paving, it is recommended to apply a minimum depth of 15mm on a solid surface and only in areas with foot traffic. Going below this depth may compromise the strength of the surface, leading to cracking or failure.

Recommended laying thickness based on usage:

  • 15mm: Pedestrian areas, such as paths, patios and walkways.
  • 18 – 20mm: Light traffic areas, such as driveways or access roads.
  • 22mm: Heavy traffic areas where the vehicle weight doesn’t exceed 7.5 tonnes. This includes cycle lanes, often due to their location adjacent to busy roads.
  • 40 – 100mm: Tree pits or areas lacking a solid surface.

What things to keep in mind when laying resin bonded paving?

Once the resin components are mixed, they should be poured onto the surface immediately. Any resin left in the bucket will begin to cure quickly due to the heat generated by the chemical reaction, potentially making it unusable.

Be aware of the air temperature when installing. In conditions of 25°C or higher, the resin will cure much faster, often within 20 minutes or less. Ensure you have a sufficient team ready to lay the material promptly once mixing begins.
